The Labe C. Scheinberg Award Contributes to Building a Comprehensive Care Model for MS

Hackensack, NJ and Atlanta, GA ― The comprehensive approach to patient care has long been advocated by the Consortium of Multiple Sclerosis Centers (CMSC) as the most effective model for treating patients with the disabling disease, Multiple Sclerosis (MS). One of the earliest proponents of the team approach to MS care was Dr. Labe C. Scheinberg, who was a founder of the CMSC as well as the American Society of Neurorehabilitation. When he founded the Albert Einstein MS Center in New York City during the 1970s, Dr. Scheinberg brought together neurologists, psychologists, physical therapists, and nurses who had extensive experience in working with patients with MS. The CMSC established the award during Dr. Scheinberg’s lifetime in support of the principle of comprehensive care in MS. After his death in 2004, the award was continued in his name.

“The comprehensive care model in Multiple Sclerosis is unlike any other approach to medical care,” explains CMSC President, Colleen Harris. “This is a patient-centered approach where professionals involved in all phases of the patients’ care can communicate and actively collaborate in decision-making to provide a more supportive and informed treatment plan. The patients have a team around them, each of whom can help them understand their disease and work with the treatments. The impact on quality of life for these patients is enormous.”

Presentation of the 2009 Labe C. Scheinberg award was made at the CMSC Annual Meeting in Atlanta, GA, May 30th to first author, Katrina Williams, Manager Neurological Ageing and Balance Clinic and Specialist Neurological Physiotherapist at the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences, University of Queensland, Brisbane, Australia, for her project, Two Physiotherapy Models of Service Delivery for People with Multiple Sclerosis”.

This award is partially supported by a three-year pledge by the children of Dr. Scheinberg, and Mr. and Mrs. William Kristol, Dr. David Scheinberg, and Dr. Grace Minamoto. “Our goal is to continue to promote the comprehensive care model, and to encourage healthcare professionals to increasingly develop this model in their institutions,” said Dr. James Simsarian, President of the Foundation of the CMSC. “We are very pleased to honor this exceptional work and look to continue building the future of MS care through these and other awards.”
